Interesting mystery but the pace was absolutely glacial. For example: It opens with them finding a body, then jumps back in time and the investigation does not find the body again until a third of the way through. It's not until half way through that the protagonist Hanna even meets up with the police force. It crawls along at a snails pace, jumping back and forth between characters who are all distracted by struggles in their personal lives. I wouldn't usually mind but it made the story feel like it was dragging on and on, especially since the solution to the murder was pretty clear to me from just the first few chapters but we had to wade though so many obvious red herrings and drama before they start investigating the stuff that was actually relevant. I know this is the set up for a series so maybe the next books won't wait so long to get to the point but this one definitely dragged its feet.

I greatly enjoyed this book even if I found the opening to be a little cliché and the character descriptions a bit forced. Would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a dark murder mystery. The Swedish mountain setting definitely gives it a unique feel. However, if there are any topics you are particularly sensitive to I recommend taking a glance through the content warnings as this book deals with a lot of heavy subject matter.

There are mentions of Sexual Assault, Domestic abuse, and Rape throughout the book that very in detail/intensity:

most of the mentions or Domestic Abuse center around the main character’s former work with abused women. There is are two specific mentions of a past rape as an explanation for what inspired this character to go down this career path.

A character gets into a car accident where:

They are purposely run off the road but they survive with only minor injuries and frostbite.

A character attempts suicide:

by overdosing on sleeping pills. This is described in detail and their children end up finding them. They initially survive but later die in the hospital

Trafficking:

through out the story one of the main characters works to expose a human trafficking ring that is physically abusing and exploiting illegal immigrants.
