I felt mixed about this one. It included very moving and familiar portrayals of small-town religion and community. Its main character is messy and I loved her for it, was rooting for her as she grew up. There were times where it leaned into melodrama a little too much for my taste, but it’s also from the POV of a teenager, so it doesn’t feel unearned. I was disturbed by the amount of adults (some trusted, some not) who were sexually inappropriate around kids. But on the other hand, it’s fiction and I didn’t read this as an endorsement of these characters from the author. So. Complicated feelings. When it was powerful, it was really powerful.

A gritty novel written in a poetic style. Very metaphorical and stylized. Strong characters with humor. A little angsty at times but charming.
