This book. This is my favorite Lucy Foley and maybe my favorite book this year. While it’s a page turner, there is great character depth, and beautiful stories. I am a fan of storylines told across time spans, and Foley has done it to great effect here. Five stars.

I was compelled by the story for awhile but then it got to a point where it seemed like the author had gotten through most of the plot and then she just went off onto this tangent that just delayed the storyline instead of adding real value to it. I had to force myself to finish it, which I succeeded in doing because I cared about the characters and wanted to see how it all played out.

I did not expect to have such a desire to keep reading to the end…but that’s exactly what happened (finally) about 150 pages in. It was a slower start for me - I think due to a different writing style and setting/time period - but the depth of the plot is what really hooked me. The way connections between characters and events and time periods were built amazed me! The love and loss felt all throughout this book was strong, and the imagery throughout was incredible!

A transforming story of a lost young woman and a history and future worth learning about.

This book fell short for me. It had a lot of potential but it felt like the (several...) plot lines never fully developed because there was so much going on. I give it a solid 3 stars, didn't love it but didn't hate it.

Also: I HIGHLY recommend not listening to the audiobook for the sole reason that the narration for Oliver is extremely unenjoyable. It made me not like the character as a whole even though his story line was good (although it felt incomplete).
