Okay so this is described as a dark fairytale on here, but it’s actually a bleak fairytale. One of the very few books I’ve read that doesn’t waste a single page. It genuinely holds you captive from beginning to end. Nothing feels wasteful. Nothing feels unnecessary. All of the characters are compelling. The twists and turns and reveals feel earned. I just really loved this book a lot. Krystal Sutherland has such a visceral voice as a writer, I can really feel and see and touch and smell and taste EVERYTHING she puts on the page.

Very much looking forward to reading more from her.

4.5. I was REALLY pleasantly surprised by this one. It was super spooky and mysterious, and Sutherland's prose was beautiful and descriptive. I loved the focus on the sisters and their relationship. Also, the ending was incredibly satisfying. I will say there was a little too much retrospective monologuing on Iris' part. Also,
the kiss between Tyler and Iris was so unnecessary! It completely undermined Iris' character, who up until this point was completely dedicated to Grey. If she truly was dedicated, she wouldn't have kissed her boyfriend
!!

not what i thought it’d be. but then again what did i expect? stephen-king-kinda thriller? well...yes.

reading the synopsis that is what i thought it would be like. but nope. its like those dark stories parents read their kids to sleep.

hush! my darling. if you don’t close your eyes gray hollow would come and skin you alive. then wear your skin and enter your world and live with us. as our child. you’d be dead. so sleep.

oops! i think i spoiled the whole book!

but the writing was very beautiful with a lot of twist and turns and creepy little flowers growing out of the main character’s gut (literally)

Check the content warnings, and take them very seriously!

That said, this book is nothing like I expected it to be. It's a glorious, dark fairy tale.

Without giving too much detail...

All the very best villians are somewhat sympathetic.

Also, the idea that souls can get stuck after death, not just because they have unfinished business,  BUT ALSO BECAUSE SOMEONE LIVING IS UNABLE TO LET THEM GO ... just, wow. My heart hurts in the best way.
