Okay so this is described as a dark fairytale on here, but it’s actually a bleak fairytale. One of the very few books I’ve read that doesn’t waste a single page. It genuinely holds you captive from beginning to end. Nothing feels wasteful. Nothing feels unnecessary. All of the characters are compelling. The twists and turns and reveals feel earned. I just really loved this book a lot. Krystal Sutherland has such a visceral voice as a writer, I can really feel and see and touch and smell and taste EVERYTHING she puts on the page.

Very much looking forward to reading more from her.

This is definitely being added to my list of favourite YA books. It’s tense, it’s creepy, it’s engaging, and I loved the depth of worldbuilding.

I do have a couple of complaints. The first is that I felt that we were constantly being told how much of a bond the sisters had without being shown it, especially as both the older sisters leave the youngest behind. Even at the end it felt like we never saw much positive interaction between the sisters as half the time one or more was unconscious or missing. My second complaint is that I found all of the twists very predictable, but this isn’t too much of a complaint as it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the book.

This book was so addicting I started with an audiobook but it was taking too long so I picked up the book and read it in one sitting! There was a steadily creeping sense of atmosphere and dawning horror that catches you right away. It was grotesque but also beautiful. It reminded me a lot of Jeff Vandermeer's worlds and creatures, except it's also our own. The relationship between the sisters was scary and intense but also beautiful; can you love someone too much? I also didn't see the ending coming or the truth of what was really going on. Brilliant book, though not for the faint of heart.

Warning: spoiler alert!!!

Adventour. Horror at certain point yet fun to read. A plot twist at the end. A big one! A lovable character that I'd slowly adored end up dead. 😢 but overall the plot is good and I had fun reading it.
