About the Book: Poetry can be squeezed from one single word. Taking one word and rearranging the letters, Bob Raczka creates poems ranging from funny to serious in a fantastic poetry collection.

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: Lemonade has library program for tweens written all over it! I first heard about this book during a upcoming book release webcast and knew I had to get my hands on it. I'm a big fan of Raczka's book, Guyku, and I was intrigued with the idea of taking one word and creating a poem.

The poems are so creative and fun! I love the layout of the book which lets the reader see how the poems were made and what letters were used. On the next page, the actual poem appears. This would a be a great tween program and I plan on using it in the writer's workshop programs I run for tweens and teens.

Sometimes it is a bit of a stretch to make the poem make sense, but it's the creativity that really counts for me. I also thought the book was a bit short-I wanted more poems. I did really love it and I hope we get more Lemonade poems soon. Such a fun and creative poetry book!

While I loved several of the poems, I think Vacation is one of my favorite:

Vacation:
Action

A
Van-
Bob Raczka, from Lemonade, 2011

Book Pairings: Guyku by Bob Rackza, Blue Lipstick by John Grandits, Won Ton by Lee Wardlaw-add all these together for a great poetry workshop!

It was really fun! I loved all the creativity that the author put in this book. The illustrations are really pretty too!

On the downside, it was really short and I would have felt a bit bad having paid 8$ for this book. I bought it on discount, so it's fine by me. Although, I will probably pick it up again and/or lend it to friends, because it was really cute.

Also, it's a good thing that the legend is printed in the back of each poem because, sometimes, it can become a bit hard to decipher.

In the final note, I would totally recommend this book to other people!

challenging funny lighthearted slow-paced
Lemonade and Other Poems Squeezed from a Single Word (2011) was written by Bob Raczka and illustrated by Nancy Doniger. It would work well for middle elementary and even through high school, as the poems are fun and relatively easy to read but challenging to imitate. Each poem is created from the letters in a single word, resulting in creative and clever text.
This collection would be a great mentor text for teaching students to write different kinds of poetry. In the introduction, the poet even describes how he modeled all of the poems in the book after one he read by another poet online, so it is a great example for students of why mentor texts are valuable and helpful to professional writers too.

Great concept, fun execution, and a type of poetry I think young adults might actually get behind.

Love this book! It's a great mentor text and great intro to poetry, especially for reluctant writers. For everyone else, it's fun, too.
