A million stars! This large book went so fast! I was not expecting some of the not-quite-twists, but surprises later in the book. I was deep in and then could not resist staying up past 4 am to find out what would happen next.

This is a wonderful book full of love of community and culture and family, but in a complicated, real-feeling way. There is a lot of tragedy and saddness there, but it doesn't totally overwhelm you because there is balance and the main character is rooted in her values and has a support system.

I live in the USA, so on Native land, and I really appreciate any opportunity to learn more about the land I live on and the people who have cared for it for centuries before my great grandparents moved here from Italy. Especially when the author makes it so fun to learn!

I enjoyed this book on a lot of levels--the plot, the characters, the mystery, what I learned about Ojibwe culture and traditions--and definitely found it suspenseful and engaging. I wouldn't say the writing itself is my favorite (I felt like it did a lot of telling rather than showing), but it wasn't bad by any means and didn't distract from the story. I couldn't tell how it was going to end and I felt pretty satisfied with the ending
(especially that it didn't force a HEA for the romance when that would have been unhealthy)
. Overall I'd definitely recommend this.

I loved so much about this book. I loved the Native perspective and use of language, imagery, ways of knowing, respect for elders... All of it. It was wonderful to listen to with a truly masterful young voice.
In general, I do not love action/adventure stories where one implausible exciting thing piles on top of the next. Drugs! Murder! Violence!  Running wildly through the woods! Etc! I just find it unrealistic enough that I lose the plot. No one's life is like that.
But the parts I liked outweigh the implausible parts, so, yeah, a good rating!

I’m usually really skeptical of popular YA books, but this was excellent. Audio was phenomenal. Really nailed it on all fronts.

It's a great mystery novel that gives Nancy Drew, and also centers native culture, real contemporary issues, and native women. Big recommend if you're looking to get sucked into something!

My favorite quotes from this book:

"DNA tests can tell you what tribe you're from?"
"Shhh." Fingers to lips again.
He turns to me. Awfully close. I move a step away and keep talking in a low voice.
"You're thinking of those bullshit ancestry tests where you mail your spit in a test tube and they say you're eighteen percent Native American. Those tests are imperfect. They generalize results to geographic regions, not countries or tribes or bands. People take those tests and think they can enroll in a tribe. It doesn't work like that." (Pg. 198)

"Love means wanting you to have a good life, even if I'm not in it. And your love for me? It should be that strong, so you want that for me, too." (pg. 477)
