My almost four-year-old is now getting to the point where she is ready for short chapter books and this fit the bill perfectly. There are five chapters that are about ten pages each, with each page about half words, half full-color illustrations. Short enough to read in one sitting but long enough to split up between a couple of sittings if you want. Bonus that my daughter got a big kick out of the main (human) character having the same name as me.

King the dog is the narrator of this story. When some of the peanut butter treats his owner Kayla made go missing, King is initially thought to be the culprit. King smells an intruder though, and with the help of a friend’s puppy, Thor, they are able to catch the intruder and solve the case.

I really like that the narrator is a dog, and that he can understand Kayla, but she can’t (obviously) understand him. The images don’t take up too much space, and the words are clearly separated from them, to give the early reader a chance to focus on the words. I also like that it is split up into chapters to give the reader a sense of confidence in reading a “chapter book.” The vocabulary used is simple enough, and context-specific with baking and detective words, but this book is definitely attainable for an early reader with the help of an adult.

A new pair of sleuths is in town! When freshly-baked dog treats go missing, Kayla and her pet, King, are on the case. Full-color illustrations accompany accessible text in large font to engage emerging readers in a classic whodunit. Dog fans will love that the story is told from King’s perspective!

Washington author!
Extremely on the edge between the Beginning Reader section and the Bridge books in the Juvenile fiction section in our libraries (at the moment).

This adorable mystery isn't just good for developing reading skills but also for developing problem solving skills such as list-making and thinking through possibilities. It is both cute and adorable.

Suitable for ages 7 - 9.

This is an ADORABLE mystery (from the point of view of the dog!) and a great early chapter book.

I am very excited for this new series by Dori Hillestad Butler. Featuring the same character from her Buddy Files series, but it takes place before that series, back when he was King the Dog.
Featuring a predicable plot line and structure, this series is perfect for readers who are ready for a longer story line across chapters, yet still need some supports.

Told from the POV of the dog, but not with dumbed down writing. Phrases are repeated over and over to give early readers success with repetitive language. This book is less than 50 pages and only has a 2-3 sentences on each page.
