Reading for my Children’s Lit class at Ithaca College

I find it crazy that this is marketed as middle grade. Such a strong, but heavy story—one that I don’t think could be told any other way, but might stress me out as a kid. I’m not sure if I would have been able to handle it while I was in the middle grade genre. Will be interesting to talk about it in class.

Books like this are so important to the canon. It’s a good way to introduce kids to diversity and grief.

I have heard wonderful things about this book and it definitely did not disappoint! It was deep and emotional and meaningful and so well written. I love Callender's writing style and way with words.  There were a lot of flaws in the characters, but they were worked on in a real and convincing way and their character growth was one of my favorite parts of the book. This was beautiful.

A book about loss. A book about love. A book about acceptance.

Content warnings: domestic abuse, death/grief, and homophobia.

This book is so beautiful. The writing, the story, the characters and the messages all touched my heart and I am so happy to know that these kind of stories are available to children today.

I was so impressed by how the author approached complex issues without completely simplifying or smothering them with an 'happily ever after'.

Life isn't easy. Everyone isn't going to accept you. You are going to make mistakes and not everyone will forgive you. But as King's Father said, "even if they don't...you'll be alright. You'll go on living."
