My kids (4&5) have been enjoying the Magic Tree House series but they are definitely not my favorites. I am reading them aloud and it’s somewhat painful. There’s almost no variation in sentence structure or length throughout the books. It makes a very choppy read aloud.
In this book Jack and Annie visit Hawaii at some point in the past, I am assuming pre European contact. Jack and Annie meet two Hawaiian children who teach them about surfing and hula, meanwhile Jack and Annie condescendingly explain what “books” and “reading” are. This felt problematic to me, as it painted the ancient Hawaiians as ignorant. Ans even worse, I am sure some kids may have missed the quick mention that this was a Hawaii of the past and come away with the idea that Hawaiians don’t know what books are.
I can see the appeal of these books for new chapter book readers, and I acknowledge that some of my critiques are related to the intended audience and meeting them where they are. This would I would strongly not recommend, or at least make sure to discuss with kids the whole idea about not understanding books.

Oh my...the teacher in me couldn't resist! Yay, Jack & Annie are learning about Hawaii!
I was scared the whole time reading this haha I liked the magic they found in this one.
Eleanor says: they were freaking out about the big wave. It came from the ocean because of the earthquake. They were safe. I didn’t like when they laughed at Jack. I liked when they were all happy and friends again at the end. They told their story of everything they did with a hula dance.
I think the strength of these stories is how they leave kids wanting to learn more, which is lovely. The tsunami felt a bit unnecessary, though.
I’ve officially made it through my re-read of the original 28 Magic Tree House books!! This installment was one of my all-time favorites as a kid and I can still attest that it’s one of the best in the series.

Really enjoyed this book and how it covered friendship. Friendship is important and I feel that it covered that well.
Jack & Annie visit Hawaii (apparently before contact with the Americans & Europeans) and learn to surf . . . and survive a tsunami!
lighthearted
fast-paced
My thoughts: This was the last expected book for end this part of the Magic Tree House Series. I honestly do not remember much about it, so I think that is bad. If you can't remember the last book in the series, it must have ended in an unmemberable way.
