Maybe it's been like two years since I had read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book but I missed her writing! God! First The Dark Elements series wowed me and now I'm so head over heels in love with this! If you like a sassy, stubborn, kickass, and a funny female character (staple Armentrout heroine), you will definitely love this gem!

Pas mal mais vraiment trop proche de Vampire Academy. J’espère que la suite sera différente.

Loved! As to be expected with any JLA book. I can see Seth becoming a favorite, although I still love Aiden so far. Full review to come on my blog Lisa Loves Literature soon!!

Uhm. Okay.
After the first two chaptes I really thought this is going to be a massive Vampire Academy copy. But after that, the impression kinda fainted (Although that thing with Caleb and Alex getting tortured together reminded me of VA, just as the forbidden love between "teacher" and student and... well, I guess there are MASSIVE similarities, but on the other hand - to quote my tutorial teacher: "There is almost nothing that hasn't been said, thought or written down." So I guess it's kind of legit.)
I'm gonna give the rest a shortcut, because I like the plot but I dislike the characters. Seth and Aiden don't seem to be so different and sometimes it feels like they both mingled their characteristics (which sucks, btw!). I didn't really get the whole Lea-affaire (besides that she had to be the kid, that looses her parents first) and I think Seth's character was a massive thing at the beginning but he developed into something I really don't understand yet. I don't understand his motives or his perspective and sometimes it seems like he has been forced to do something, although the simple IDEA of his character was supposed to stay out of the spot light for a little longer.
Aiden is kinda hot, but he fails his impact on me, just as Seth does. Again, I have to go with the side characters... ALL THE LOVE FOR CALEB!
I think he's pretty cool, still not extraordinary though.
All in all I put my money on "Aiden and Alex are getting married in the end" and on "Alex is not going to be a loser Apollyon, but a badass-nothing-could-stop-me-but-I'm-willing-to-be-a-saint"-Apollyon.
And concerning this particular bet, I'm SO willing to loose the money! *in need for some serious life-changing-plot-suprises*

Honest reaction: (might or might not contain Vampire Academy and Covenant spoilers; read at your own risk)

It was okay. Everything was so predictable. If I hadn’t read Vampire Academy, then I would have absolutely loved it.
The story was intriguing, but I already predict every milestone from a mile away.. so there’s not really a point.

I could get myself to fall for any of the guys, so right now I’m just Team nobody. However, it is very obvious who she is going to end up with if you have read Vampire Academy. I hope the other guy doesn’t have the same ending as Adrian though

This was a really good book I'd give it a 4.5 so close to being a 5 star but there were a few things that just kinda drove me nuts and kept the rating below 5. It's well written for the most part I actually found some places that there would be a sentence that didn't quite make sense like it had the wrong word in and even some places where the wrong pronoun was used (her instead of him) and that is something that truly bothers me. The storyline is quite good and I am very excited to read the next one in the series.

MY EYES SNAPPED OPEN AS THE FREAKISH SIXTH sense kicked my fight or flight response into overdrive. The Georgia humidity and the dust covering the floor made it hard to breathe. Since I’d fled Miami, no place had been safe. This abandoned factory had proved no different.
The daimons were here."

So fun fact, I actually read these AFTER I read the Titan series (New Adult off -shoot - there are spoilers if you read it before this one) series which was pretty interesting, but I digress.

Covenant is a YA fantasy series following seventeen year old Alexandra, a half-blood Hematoi (children who descended from the Greek gods) is forced to return to the Covenant, an academy to train these descendants, after her mother’s death at the hands of daimons. Alexandra must prove her worth and become a sentinel or face slavery and a loss of self. Thankfully she has pure-blood Aidan St. Delphi on her side - if only halfs and pures could be together…

This series differs from Lux series by JLA in that it appears to focus more heavily on the plot and action of the series. Alexandra must train and fight to prove she deserves to be there and only has a small window of opportunity. She starts as an underdog here but with a few aces of her sleeve her having killed daimon's on her own. At the same time she is a reckless and wild child who chafes at the constraints placed on her at the detriment of her success. I found her to be an interesting character and I enjoyed seeing her grow but she tended to act for thinking which could be frustrating.

"'You need to know about love. The things people will do for love. All truths come down to love, do they not? One way or another, they do. See, there is a difference between love and need. Sometimes, what you feel is immediate and without rhyme or reason.' She sat up a little straighter. 'Two people see each across a room or their skin brushes. Their souls recognize the person as their own. It doesn’t need time to figure it. The soul always knows... whether it’s right or wrong.'”

There is a light romance in this series between Aidan and Alexandra but it is only just budding, seeing as this is a forbidden love in the sense half-bloods and pure-bloods are not also to be together and will be severely punished in caught (ie. slavery and/death). I would have liked to see more grow from this and I know it does grow but instead we are just teased here. That said, the banter and smoothness in which these characters engage with each other cannot be ignored and JLA always does an excellent job here.

There is also political underpinning in this series as well with a devise social structure that I am intrigued about. Alexandra has a much more important part to play in this world than she realized and truths are being revealed around why did her mom take her and run from the Covenant if it was meant to protect her.

Overall, a solid introduction to this world. I would say I still prefer the Titan series over this but I think this mainly had to do with the focus of the story - I would have liked more focus on Aidan and Alexandra’s relationship growing and evolving. I will definitely pick up the next book.

When I started this book, I worried I had aged myself out of it since it took me 8 years to finally read it. Luckily, the second half pulled me in and had a nice little twist to keep me interested. The foreshadowing is pretty strong so almost everything is predictable. I am fascinated to see where the story goes next and how her relationship evolves with Seth.

I am finishing up my re-read of this series and it still holds up. While the first book does follow some common YA elements it’s a really interesting idea and I enjoy the world building and character. This series is honestly almost as hard to put down reading it a second time a decade later.
