Excellent story telling, not that I expected anything less. The world of Hail Bristol and her people is instantly accessible and inviting, pulling the reader into the intrigue, danger and excitement as princess-turned gunrunner-turned empress tells us the story of Indrana and the universe surrounding her.

I love the adventure and the witty dialogue. But such cliffhanger!

I enjoyed the first trilogy, but I found this book a bit of a slog. Most of it is buildup to the last few pages, which sets up the next installment.

I had a hard time getting into the first ~60% of this book. It was fine, but I wasn't that invested. The motivations didn't make a whole lot of sense, sometimes due to intentionally withheld information, but for not entirely believable reasons. Hail's reactions and other's reactions to Hail were repetitive (like in the previous trilogy), and a bit too much 'show not tell'.

However, the ending was very griping, and I'm eager to start the next book.

Hailimi Bristol, former gunrunner, now Empress of Indrana, has been manipulated into agreeing to head up a peace summit, to stop a war before it starts. Things go downhill from there.

I love Hail and her bodyguards and her friends. The action is great, the plotting is complex and the world building is intriguing.

Highly recommended for those who love Space Opera.

A fairly good example of quitting while you're ahead.

The grief episodes have become repetitive, as is the over-done introspection regarding the choices made. Far too many cups of chai and slender shoulders, and bad dudes out to get the Star of Indrana. Not going to bother with the remainder of this series.

K.B. Wagers does breakneck pace and action incredibly well. It's what made the Indranan War series so good. She also sets up political intrigue well, but it's just not as gripping reading. That's what we get here in the first of the Farian War series. We're still following Empress Hail Bristol after the events of the first series, but most of the book is long, almost dreary political setup. Nothing happens in the first hundred pages. When it does finally kick into high gear, it really kicks into gear. But it comes way, way too late. I'll probably keep reading the series (because it did kick into gear and got really good), but you have to slog through a lot to get there.
