She Is Haunted by Paige Clark

A debut collection of thematically linked short stories exploring late capitalism, complex difficult mothers, Asian fetishisation and hate, women’s desires and the joy of a good dog. The style is gorgeously detached and understated, while remaining precise and well crafted. The gentle weirdness in each story is subtle and clever. Clark shows such restraint and the stories here are so fully rendered that it’s hard to believe this is a debut.

2.75 stars. I bought this book not realising it was a short story book. which is sad considering the first chapter was incredible! I would die for it to be turned into a full book. there were definitely also some other great stories and the writing itself I enjoyed, I just don’t think that I’m a short story girl.

nonetheless, that first chapter (Elisabeth Kübler-Ross) is one of my all time favourite stories, and here is my favourite line from it:

I think God must be lonely. His face is not what I expected.

Although I didn’t care for all the stories in this collection (titular piece included) there were some stand outs that I felt truely captured that bizarre thing we call grief. The elements of dystopia/futuristic corporations were unexpected but well done, especially in Gwendoline Wakes, which I could have read a full length novel based on. Shoutout to ‘Elizabeth Cobbler-Ross’, ‘Times I wanted to be you’ and ‘Why My Hair is Long’ for all hitting me right in the tear ducts.
