I much preferred the original. I really can't get on board with one-dimensional ancient witches in succubus form because their fatal flaw is always love.
The first one had enough of a twist and satisfying ending that a second one introducing a supernatural twist just seemed like a sad attempt at a sequel.

The Ancient Evil: Or, Oh Not This Again!
Chain Letter by Christopher Pike was a fun, thrilling ride. So why Pike had to continue this story again in this mess of a book is beyond me? Chain Letter was a simple story with a good, satisfying ending. K, cool. It was over. But noooooo, here we are again, back with our tortured gang to torture them so more, but this time make it absolutely bonkers ridiculous.
I truly can't with this book and how far off the rails it goes. The characters are given even less and made to do truly stupid things that make zero sense and the ending is beyond any comprehension. It's a disappointing sequel to a book that didn't need one.

I read the 'updated' version and I have to say that, other than a few typos, this one felt like it had less updating in terms of mentioning of cell phones and what not than the first book. The dialog was definitely overhauled in both books because it just didn't feel like a Christopher Pike book. I enjoyed it anyway and I do have one more Pike trilogy that is 'updated' that I plan to read.
The story expanded on the first and frequent mention was made back to the first book. I liked where it went. I would have liked the batshit crazy to have started sooner but it felt fresh as far as YA slasher books from the 1980's go. The ending was a bit sappy, but that's Pike for you.

Tony is the worst character I have ever read, I didn't even want to finish this book simply because of him. I have never been more angry at a book in my entire life.

The second book was totally not necessary, yet here I am re reading it yet again.

I liked the first book because of the psychological aspect of it. This book was so completely different from the first, and not in a good way. I believe the first book would have been better off as a stand alone novel than adding this one with it. To me, this story just dragged on endlessly, and appeared to be a very amateur writing style.

The Ancient Evil is the second book in the Chain Letter Series By Christopher Pike. It is a Young Adult spooky story with supernatural elements, twists, mystery and more. As with the first book, I couldn’t quite ‘get into’ this story as much as I would have liked. I t was just an OK read for me, and not one of my favourites from Mr. Pike.
Thank you, Mr. Pike!

I needed a quick mindless read...and I found it. Now I remember why I never got into these kind of books when I was younger
