A pretty quick read. Six issues are compiled to tell the tale of Ares, of how it all began. A prequel of Red Rising, wherein the story was first told shortly after the events of Golden Son, though it was not told word for word with what happened but it was enough to give us the gist that there was a first Persephone before Eo. The woman that inspired the movement, that later on gave way to a revolution. This compilation showed us a different Fitchner and a more detailed story of what really happened.

This graphic prequel misses most of the magic of the books for me, but that’s not to say it wasn’t still excellent! A perfect addition to the pierce brown collection

DO NOT READ THIS PREQUEL WITHOUT FIRST READING THE RED RISING SERIES BOOKS!! There are so many references that you will not understand and it will just frustrate you, plus there will be spoilers to the Red Rising books if you read this first. If you are interested in reading the series, go straight to the books and read this graphic novel after you read the original first 3 books (Red Rising, Golden Son and Morning Star).
I like that Pierce Brown decided to do a different format for the prequel, it’s a great way to expand on the Red Rising collection and keep it interesting. Even book 4 (Iron Gold) is written a little differently and I like that he differentiates the timing of these stories within the Rising by using different formats.
I enjoyed the artwork and the story was true to (and flowed with) the Red Rising series. 4.5/5
