I absolutely loved the authors use of foreshadowing. I knew a train wreck was coming, and desperately needed to watch the crash.

I really enjoyed the parallel storylines and whole cast of characters! Quite different from Evelyn Hugo, as our attention is split between the four Riva siblings, but I thought they were still written well and developed nicely (especially as Reid wrote flashbacks to their childhood). Overall, a great read.

The number of people who say this fell flat for them, may be talking from a place of privilege and/or not understanding the family dynamic. This book hit me hard. As the daughter of a depressed, bipolar, self-medicating alcoholic mother and absent father, I know what it is like to take on the responsibility of caring for and raising your siblings. I also know what it feels like to never, ever put yourself first. I didn’t sob while reading the book, likely because I am so jaded by life I don’t really cry for anything ever at all. But I ACHED reading this. I felt my own pain returning as so much of this mirrored my own family dynamics.

If this is also your lived experience, I think you’ll be able to connect with so many themes of the book, if not the characters directly.

I will be back with a full review soon
