honestly was going to give this a respectable 4 stars for being good enough, although not my favorite middle grade animal fantasy. But then I remembered the "It's not fair that if the eldest is a daughter she doesn't get to become Chieftan, but it is what it is" part and took a star away. Paz is not out here doing the most just to be defeated by fantasy rabbit sexism

This is a very cute beginning to the series. I liked the drama and adventure through it all. There was a little magic but not so much that it thwarted the flow or difficulty of the quests. I enjoyed imagining rabbits instead of humans, it was a bit of an exercise because I kept imagining human versions of the characters. Also, it's a bit Warrior Cats-like in that aspect. I may have predicted the final twist but it was still so satisfying to read it. Very well written, very much enjoyed.
