Nothing is more humbling than witnessing characters younger than you experience an all-consuming love story, when meanwhile your closest relationship is with your textbooks🙂‍↕️.

But yes suchhh a good book, and major plus points for actually using the word 'lesbian'!!

« You found each other in life and you find each other in death and you’ll find each other in whatever’s beyond the sea.

Afterlove follows the bittersweet love story between Ash and Poppy, a journey of first love, but also a journey filled with tragedy, but also one full of hope. It's a sad story for sure, but it is also hopeful and heartwarming too.

Afterlove is also a 'paranormal' book, but in a really subtle sense, but also not in a subtle sense. It's kind of hard to describe. The first half of the novel is completely regular, it follows this beautiful and blossoming love between Ash and Poppy, but halfway through, the paranormal aspect is introduced, but it still takes a backseat to this love story. Ash becomes a grim reaper but struggles to leave her old life, and struggles to let death separate her from the girl she loves. I really loved this paranormal aspect - not really dead but not really alive, and like, grim reapers? More of this in YA, please.

It's a really subtle blend of contemporary romance with the paranormal, and Byrne does it splendidly.

Afterlove is a captivating love story filled to the brim with emotion, and an absolutely brilliant addition to the ukya market. It has a beautiful cover, and a beautiful story inside to match.

Bought this due to Book Tok and really
Enjoyed it
I worried it was more aimed at teenagers, which it slightly is than opposed to a 26 year old female but it ready beautifully
Nice to read about the FMC being brown skinned and gay.
I wanted to know more after the ending though, what happened to Poppy?! Did ash find her? Which is likely The writers point!
My only reasoning for losing a star is I struggled to feel emotional with the story.

Young adult isn't my usual go-to, but one of my best friends loved this book, so I thought I'd give it a go. I loved the concept and the representation of the book. The cover is beautiful. I liked that it had a before and after type of love story. Unfortunately for me, I didn't feel the emotion within that I thought I should have especially with the love, death and grief this story had. Even with that, it wasn't a bad read. It was good to read and had some beautifully written passages, but I guess I needed a bit more from it. Not sure what that bit more is but I'm not sorry I've read it.
