I was looking for a fictional kinda short mythology book when I stumbled upon this one in KU. With fewer than 250 pages I am in love with the world the author has created! Percy (Persephone) is a regular human in NY, until Zeus shows up and forces her to compete as a contestant to become Hades wife! Only catch is, she was once Hades wife, but her memories have been wiped clean and she was forced to reside on Earth.
I know, I know it sounds crazy but omg it was such a blast to read. I’m so excited to read book 2!

I bought this because I love Hades and Persephone retellings. This was lackluster at best. The read was quick and easy so it would definitely be a nice filler between bulky reads, but go into it expecting less.

Highlight!

Look, this isn't the most compelling or original Hades/Persephone themed story I've ever come across.

The characters are more campy than dynamic. The setup for Persephone entering the world of the gods is lackluster and sort of shallowly conceived. They keep calling her 'tests' a competition, but she never actually COMPETES with Minthe or anyone else (in fact, we never even meet any other contestants).  The trials themselves are... not as dark or as gritty as I was hoping for (She had to host a masquerade ball, no I'm not kidding). Hades and Persephone don't get a ton of time together in this book (but I actually sort of respect the slower burn). Hades keeps telling Persephone to lose the trials. But then helps her in almost all of them?????

That being said...I kind of had fun with this?

The mystery surrounding why Persephone was relieved of her power and dropped in the human world was intriguing. The characters, while not especially complex, were entraining.

The writing isn't perfect, but it's accessible and makes for a very quick, easy read.

Wow! I don’t know how I found this book but I’m happy I did because I really enjoyed it. This is a Persephone and Hades retelling.
Persephone for a mysterious reason was cast out from the underworld and had her mind completely wiped out to believe that she was a simple mortal woman.
When Zeus finds her and scares her into the immortal realm of Gods, persephone runs into my personal favorite Hecate.
This is just a really fun spin on Persephone and Hades. She gets thrown into trial of finding a new wife for Hades. What’s ironic is that she was already his wife at one point and clearly something happened that had her either running away or forcibly going away from Hades and now she’s back to try to become his wife for the second time. She has no choice but to continue on in these trials. No one will let her back in the mortal world.
“I’m not doing the trials. I don’t want be here. I don’t want anything to do with a creature who is surrounded by death, who embodies death”.

We see all different kinds of gods and goddesses in this book which was really fun to read about. The book ends on a cliffhanger because this is a trilogy. I can’t wait to find out the reason why she was cast it out in the first place. And I can’t wait to see her hopefully reconnect with Hades..
