Oh god this book broke my heart but also filled it up with love, kindness, and bravery. This is a book about a school shooting yes, but fundamentally it is a book about brave students and teachers who are risking their lives for each other. Mr Marr ensuring his students get safely into the library before being shot. Rafi, with delusional PTSD running through the woods to save his brother and saving as many children as he can. Brave Hannah sitting with Mr Marr and stroking his face comforting him. Daphne and Sally-Anne in the theatre holding the doors open for anymore students whilst comforting the ones they have with them. Camille barricading windows with clay whilst staring at a gunman. Neil, who has been off work with depression, staying behind to hold his bosses hand as he dies.Yes it’s a story about a school shooting but the attackers are barely described, they are not glamourised, it is not about them. It is about the tremendously brave things people can do when faced with the upmost horror. I sobbed reading the ending. This is a book that will stay with me.
