The Shining Girls didn't really make me a huge a fan of Beukes, but it was interesting enough that I wanted to read more of her writing. Broken Monsters has me thinking I may be a fan after all. She makes me like things I'm normally not crazy about in fiction: serial killers, internet culture, annoying teenagers. If you're already into those things, this ought to be perfect. It's pretty intense stuff, well-written and smart. The ending is all over the place and I'm not sure what to make of the paranormal elements, but I'll definitely keep reading whatever Beukes comes up with next.

I have mixed feelings about this one.
It has some good parts, like the characters - even if you don't get to know them inside-out, the parts that you get seem authentic.
On the other hand, the thriller part of the book leaves so much to wish for. And the writing technique in the last scene (going from one character to another) instead of increasing the suspense, just annoyed me.
But I gave the book 3 stars since I enjoyed reading it.

Crazy enjoyable read but think some point of views were kind of useless and made no sense till the end.

A very well written and imaginative mix of horror story, fantasy and murder mystery with a wonderful heroine, this book was still gruesome and repellent. So two stars off -- I had to make myself finish it.

Too many characters, a constantly rotating cast and ever changing point of view that’s disorienting and hard to follow. I struggled to maintain interest in some of the point of views when others sounded so much more promising. I especially disliked Layla’s chapters, which felt jarringly tonally different and obnoxious as well as out of touch; a caricature of teenage life.
