Adam's ex shows up with a problem, her one-night stand turned into a mean stalker that beat her and burned her house down. The stalker comes to town with a little extra "character" and causes some real trouble in town.
At the same time, there's a series of violent murders in town and Mercy is called in by Tony to do a little research on who the magical murderer is.
Beauclair also shows up looking for the magic walking stick, which Mercy gave to Coyote previously so Mercy has to hunt that down before the fae literally destroy everything.
Night Broken, much like the previous book, feels very messy. There are so many things going on, but there's not a lot of development into these plot points. Each plot point from the fae, to Coyote/walking stick, Guayota, serial killer, Stephan/vamps; could be explored a lot more than they were.
In a lot of ways this read a lot like a middle school rough draft: extremely plot driven without a lot of exploration in the world or with the characters.
Speaking of characters-Good gravy, Patricia Briggs does not quit with the introductions. We met three new probable main characters and a bunch of side characters. She's not messing around in this world creation---but as a reader, I could use a break from all these named characters. It's starting to get confusing.
Still was a lot better than the last book and felt a lot more compelling as Mercy tries to juggle all these possible world ending events at the same time. It's a fine book with an interesting villain that paralleled well with Christy/Adam's relationship. So here I go, but the next book is an Alpha and Omega. Charles and Anna will definitely feel like a breath of fresh air after this struggling set of Mercy books.
