A fun book with really cool illustrations. It definitely helps to have read the silmarillion beforehand

I really think these books forgot where they originally started at as a guide. They now tell you where everything derived from and which words mean what in a different mythology. It's all a comparison of Tolkien and mythologies around the world. I thought these books were supposed to go further into Tolkiens world.

Simplistic, barely explored linkages which suffer from bland repetition (1/5). Rescued by the art (4/5).

I really liked this book.
I liked that this book went through all of the different Heroes from all the the ages of Middle-Earth. I liked that it also went through the things that they did to make them the heroes.
I really liked the art that was in this as well. It made this book really interesting.
It made me love Tolkien's work more. I really enjoyed this book.

I love this book but I don’t find the Goodreads description to be very accurate. It’s more of a language and mythology study. Day shows Tolkien’s inspiration and meanings for the names of the heroes without going into a lot of detail about what the heroes did in the books. I haven’t read the Unfinished Tales or Silmarillion yet so the first half of the book was a bit hard to follow as it discusses people not mentioned in the four main books.

Like all of David Day's books, this is an informative reference guide to the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. This particular edition, The Heroes of Tolkien, is broken up into sections of ages and hero type (hobbit, dwarf etc.) with a paragraph or two about each particular hero. The illustrations in this one are particularly good and varied as they are by different artists. It reads like an encyclopedia; descriptive with all things known and yet to the point without being flowery. This is a great resource for diving deeper into Tolkien's works.
