This was interesting, the author Yehudi used their childhood struggle with weight in this graphic novel. We meet chunky when Hudi has to loose weight because he has a serious medical problem. It was interesting to see how hard his family pushed him to loose the weight even when it wasn't coming off but how Chunky tried to encourage Hudi to do the right thing but also to be proud of who he was by finding comedy. It was cute and interesting read but some moments were hard to follow in graphic novel form.

Funny graphic novel about being true to yourself - with an imaginary friend mascot, tons of jokes and gags, and best of all, fat boy confidence. Love.

I adoooooored this. It was so fun! And I love the way he utilizes sports and post game media throughout. It was such a fun and unique take on that. And I love that he stayed true to himself and when he got a little lost, he came back around and knew exactly what to do.

At face value Chunky is a fun, humourous and bold graphic novel for kids. The art is gorgeous and brightly coloured. The main character, Hudi, is full of personality and spunk. And the plot is told in a fun and unique way, with in-story interviews summarising and reviewing the ongoing plot line. Mercardo pulls from his own experience to create this book and highlights the unique chaos that a child of colour, Jewish descent and health issues may come up against.

And while this story has loads of character it would have more value alongside adult discussion. This book covers a lot of themes - from fat-shaming, health and exercise, race and religious minorities, bullying and guns. And because of the fast-paced, humour-filled story, many of these themes are dropped in quickly and not explored, presenting a narrative that normalises problematic behaviour and thinking. But if used as a point of discussion to provide context and real-life consequences this book has amazing potential.
