I received this book as a gift when I was around 13 years old and recently reread it. This book has only gotten better and more relevant with time — post pandemic and as we all face hard and complicated times ahead the basic skills (budget, preserving) and ways of living (mutual aid, kindness) emphasized here have never been more important. I also liked the bios of all the grannies - a good reminder! Knocking one star Bc I find Bried’s writing style sometimes undercuts the importance of her message.

This book is my homemaker's bible. Everything you need to know about running a household - from shopping local to green cleaning to swaddling your babes - is in between these pink covers. I have read it through several times and it is a great book to keep on hand whenever you want to reference something. I'm considering getting the men's version 'How to Build A Fire' for myself as well.

Who doesn’t love some grandmotherly advice. Yes you could find most of this on the internet but the tone of the book is really fun and cute. I loved reading about the different grandma’s and their upbringing.

When I read the intro my eye-rolling reflex got going. An NYC author (I'm a Chicago girl through and through so yes, there's a small chip on my shoulder) who didn't know how to cook! keep house! bake! clean something!
But I'll admit to my prejudices being wrong. Bried takes a light, yet no nonsense tone and gives some great advice and tips. Admitted even this former country girl didn't know everything and learned some new tricks.
I worried about the quotes from "grandmas" becoming hokey and saccharine but they weren't. They really put into perspective the author's main point that simple really is better, happiness doesn't come from a bank account and having it all starts at home.
