i liked the style of writing and story, though it definitely reminded me too much of ‘the last chairlift’. also i found the explicit description of violence and rape quite disturbing. would definitely not reread

I have never read a book quite like this. Full of complex (and not so complex) characters, few I really enjoyed. For a novel published in 1978, some of the themes within are extremely relevant (sexuality, feminism, trans-visibility, gender roles and expectations).  The conclusion of the novel felt rushed, but intentional. I appreciate a good, full-circle moment. I would recommend for someone looking for some absurdist fiction and doesn’t mind a long-winded, dramatic journey. It was frustrating to read at times, but I see the vision now.

I'm genuinely not sure if I actually liked this book or not.

I did not like it 😬 Most of the time I was either bored or irritated, interspersed with short periods of false hope that the story might finally be getting interesting.

The writing was engaging, humorous and honestly very skillful, but it doesn’t make up for a story that just didn’t hold my interest at all. I would have DNF’ed after the first chapter if I hadn’t been so curious to know what people actually like about this book (I didn’t find out).

Couldn't finish. The r*pe in the beginning wiped me out completely. Literally, if I could, I would throw this book 5,000 km away from me.
