you can never possibly imagine how disappointing it is to first find out that there’s a sequel to your favorite book and then notice that it’s just a boring, stretched out trailer for the next sequel. Maybe that’s gonna be good then? I really, really hope so because this was just not it

As the author/translator clearly states at the end of the book, this is the first part of at least a two-part series. Unfortunately, this wasn't made clear at the outset, so I assumed that like the previous Optimus Yarnspinner novel The City of Dreaming Books, that this novel was self-contained. So as I continued to read and read I kept wondering when the meat of the story was going to start. It does start (or at least picks up) towards the end of this first volume. The book itself is still an enjoyable read, full of humorously veiled references to literature and art history, and as with the previous book the characters are imaginative and engaging. This first volume was published a couple of years ago and I have not see the second part come out yet, so I'm hoping this is not a George Martin situation. This one is one for fans (as the blurb from the Washington Post states) of "equal parts J.K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein".
