This was an odd story. It was interesting how the pieces fit together in the end. There were some very cringy moments.

Hard to rate. Good but in a gross and weird way.

Yep this is officially it for me. No more extreme horror. The authors are weirdo creeps who can't write worth a shit and I'm just sick of the lack of imagination. Rape and abortion and childbirth and violence against women is "scary" and "extreme," whoopdeedoo ya got me there, call me triggered. Since when does violent, aggressive, obsessive misogyny count as a plot?

(And just like May Lietz, Duncan Ralston writes intimate female body horror without knowing/understanding how our bodies function. My faaaaaaaave!)

White people shouldn't write the N word. That's not a controversial statement. You are a white man from fucking CANADA, Duncan. Have some decorum. You can be a creepy weirdo without breaking the cardinal rule of being a half-decent white person. Don't tell me the character is black so it's fine (one wasn't) or "it's supposed to be accurate," I read that fetus scene. You do not gaf about accuracy.

Just ugh. Bad. Fucking weird and unsatisfying. Like I've said before, I DO know what I'm getting into when I pick up extreme horror (....welllllll.... I guess not since I expect the authors to BE ABLE TO WRITE). I'm looking for some whack shit and bloody gutty nasty. This isn't even anything. I don't know what it's supposed to be. Word vomit.

Don't get me started on extreme horror authors and vomit. We'll be here for hours and I will still have more complaints. It's not even a GOOD description... It doesn't even serve a *purpose!!* .... I can't.

At least the writing is minutely better than Leitz. (Yes I use her as my point of reference for shit books now. Sue me.) MINUTELY. "Although not technically a 'pinhead,' he'd been called it several times by those lower on the evolutionary chain than himself." are not the words of a particularly talented author.

Bonus: leave fat women ALLOONNEE, freaks. They have been through enough!!

I think I need therapy after reading this. This was not what I expected extreme horror to be. Yes I expected it to be super messed up but I would consider this more psychological thriller.

This book was disgusting and racist and put me off from page five. I gave it some time and then it got to a point where I needed to know what kind of author writes this and guess what? He’s disgusting and racist too!

I was drawn in on the promise of Extreme Horror, having recently read The Ruins and enjoying Eric LaRocca’s work, I thought it would be somewhere amongst that realm.

I feel like an attempt for splatterpunk was made but it just wasn’t that gruelling or terrorising - some of the plot points became extremely obvious very quickly which kind of detracted from the read. If you’re keen on gory horror this’ll tick some boxes but don’t let “extreme” be the sell point because it really wasn’t that bad.

I went into reading this book completely blind. I knew I was reading horror and that’s it. Read the content warnings!! There were parts of the book that were very strong and alarming. I gave it 3.5 stars because the writing is really well done you want to keep reading and understanding the word choices. Again read the warnings!

I don’t even know where to start with this book. One of my favorite Booktok content creators recommended this I went in completely blind and I’m coming out dazed. Honestly I loved the beginning of the story although I had no idea what direction I was headed in I was constantly on the verge of DNFing or sticking it to the end. The gore was fine for me and I enjoyed it right until the last 12 pages, the end just felt outlandish and that says alot considering the themes of the book. I also didn’t like the portrayal of the black people, consider the author is white it felt degrading toward black people which made me uncomfortable. I’m not even sure what I want to rate this book but as I said I did enjoy it just not the parts I mentioned.
