Best Children's book I've read as an "adult" (possibly ever).

A pleasantly surprising Children's fiction book. It kept me hooked throughout due to the descriptions used to portray/ visual a sense of inevitable danger.

The illustrations work very well and complement the story "Cherry stared in disbelief and wondered if her memory was deceiving her"

I originally read this in school as a class group read and vaguely remembered a certain plot point, because of the foreshadowing that was picked up on back then. The rating has very little to do with "nostalgia" and is primarily because it is a really good book, especially compared to another children's book I re-read (originally read in the same school as this book) which was very.... childish and dull.

Spoiler-y quotes below

**spoiler alert**

"Had she not been so immersed in her search (for sea shells)
She would have noticed the dark grey bank of clouds rolling in from the Atlantic.... and the tide moving remorselessly in to cover the rocks between her and Boat cove."

"She was not to know that piling up far out at sea was the first of the giant storm waves that had gathered several hundred miles out in the Atlantic, bringing with it all the momentum and violence of the deep oceans"

I think people lose that this is a children’s book. It’s predictable, because it’s a children’s book. I first read this when I was maybe ten years ago, and it stuck with me. I thought about it often, and was so pleased to see the illustrated edition. I reread this every few months. I love the settings, the illustrations, the vivid imagery aside from the illustrations. Such a fantastic piece.
