I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the the story and the way the author really sounded like he understood the mind of his female characters. I also found the way the author plugged in some true life info. one of my fave books now.

This was actually the first book I read in the series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had been looking for a few historical fictions, I found 3 and started reading 2 at the same time. I enjoyed this one so much that I put the other one away and dove right into this book. It takes place in a new Orleans just before slavery ended. Such a good read.

This book is trash from start to finish. Recommended by a friend, so I read it. Neither the elemntary style of writing, the contrived story line, the shallow characters, the implausible setting and plot, the endless poorly written sexual encounters, nor the cliche social commentary make this book worth anyone's time.

I read this a long time ago and saw it again and read it again.

This book was good. I see why the other readers could not put it down. I love that Johnie was young but she was not dumb. She used her head to get ahead in life. I wish she would not have taken the job to be a maid but I understand why she had to do it.
