Isaac Bell is a private detective working for the Van Dorn agency. He is employed to investigate the death of a naval gun engineer and more importantly prove that he did not kill himself. This quickly leads the fact that this is not an isolated death in the ship building industry. It's 1908 and the Dreadnought race is on, with the US playing catch up. Everyone wants to know what everyone else is up to in the industry. Bell soon realizes he is hunting a spy who wants to damage the US effort. It's no longer a murder case but a major espionage case that takes him across the country and back again.
The problem this is that the story is long and drawn out and confusing. There are so many characters to keep track of that's it's easy to wonder where they went or come from. The story gets lost in itself and thus is not that enthralling and gripping as one would expect.
It's only a so so read.

This book was given to me as a present. It is not my usual style of writing, but it was OK.

A fast light read. Most of the beautiful damsels in distress are saved (one way or another) and most of the good guys come out on top. But not everybody - and not always the way you'd think. One of the better Cussler's I've read in quite a while - and yes I'm sure the co-authour has a lot to do with it. So much so I'm tempted to check out his solo work. If you like this style novel, then this one's a good example of the genre. Go ahead and grab a copy.

I enjoyed this story. It has been nice to get away from the Dirk Pitt series and to read about some "historical" action adventure!

Very fun. A great book to test the audio output of my new headphones for work.
