Shakespeare's writing continues blow me away with each play of his that I read. The dialogue and monologues are beautiful, and the violence and tragedy creates the perfect tense atmosphere that kept me hooked throughout the story.

This play definitely shows the downward spiral that comes from the cycle of revenge.  As always with Shakespeare, the writing is well done and has many underlying messages. That being said, it is a very bloody story including multiple murders, infidelity, cannibalism, and rape.  Be warned, the rape while not "shown" is very intense and heart breaking. I originally started listening to the audio full cast version; but I had switch to the kindle version because it got a bit too real for me.

I’m not entirely sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, the way Shakespeare writes Black characters (particularly Aaron) plays into a lot of awful stereotypes. It moves far too fast for the gratuitous violence to have any real impact on a reader, but I’m sure that part is much more powerful as a performance. On the other hand however, this play contains one of my favorite comebacks in any piece of media ever. Act 4 scene 2 lines 75-76 in the edition I read. The language is witty and sharp. This definitely isn’t my least favorite Shakespeare play, but it’s also far from my favorite.

I enjoyed the horror aspects of this - whilst it is a bit complicated at times, you're kinda there for the gore. It's a cross between othello, romeo & Juliet, and saw
