This was hard to get through…The main character is pretty miserable. The last 1% of the book had the smallest redemption/semblance of humanity. And holy depression (pills) and drug use, Batman! This book had more normal, everyday villains than any other book that comes to mind. An interesting look into the mind of a brain I’m very glad not to inhabit.

It’s repetitive, and weird. The pill popping was too much. MC sleeps too much and she’s bitchy. Her tepid tumultuous relationship with her abuser is disturbing.

Slow but worth the read. The ending was okay.

A funny, sad, and moving story about a profoundly damaged person. A look at a group of awful people that is both incredible empathetic and super vicious. Deeply human and laugh out loud funny with a pitch black wit. Listened to the audiobook in 3 days and just couldn’t pull myself away.

Also shout out to Julia Whelan’s really amazing performance reading the audiobook.

I need to reflect on this more to give a proper review, but I really enjoyed it. This is my second Moshfegh novel and I'm once again struck by how she crafts these characters who you love and hate and root for and want to slap all at the same time. They're simultaneously realistic and ridiculous. I guess that speaks to the satirical nature of this story. Idk there was something profoundly relatable about the core of this story.
