This was hard to get through…The main character is pretty miserable. The last 1% of the book had the smallest redemption/semblance of humanity. And holy depression (pills) and drug use, Batman! This book had more normal, everyday villains than any other book that comes to mind. An interesting look into the mind of a brain I’m very glad not to inhabit.

I’m not sure how I feel about the book. It was well narrated and written but the main character is infuriating till the last page and her point of view very narrow and shallow.
It is difficult to read a book where there are very few characters with redeeming qualities.

We love unhinged women.

Lonely and depressed main character is numb and tired of her life. (Ditto, Same!) Her parents leaves here with inheritance money, she had an easy job because she is prertty and skinny, and is educated. She turns to medication and sleeping (hibernating black outs) for a year to rest and regain her senses.

I really like best friend, even if the main character wasn't a good friend to her. But what happene  to her when she took the pill? Ping xi friend was cool too. Who else would willingly stop by at your place for six months, bring you food, clean, and keep all your document safe, even if they are making art about you. Also The therapist as an interesting choice. I would have like to see any repercussions about her medical practice? Shes like handing out drugs just like that. Maybe it's a commentary that psychiatrists commonly do this and dont really get to know their patients..

Very interesting concept and fleshed-out psyche of the narrator. I did think it was a good depiction of grief and trauma. The theme of friendship that was explored was also touching to me.

However I felt that the right ideas and sentences were just flooded with randomness. I found it way too wordy, too long and because of this it lost important meaning. I really struggled through it because it was so slow. I understand that that might be the point but it just made me want to put the book down and I have read more meaningful depictions of depression using way less words. Then in contrast the ending felt rushed, unnecessary and hard to believe in the context of the rest of the book.

Another thing that bothered me was how much I felt like this was almost a guide of sorts. Like "How to go about dealing with trauma and coming back reset" There's a fine line there and to me it just felt dangerous to put this book out and act like in the end it just worked out for the main character.
But really a young woman that takes all kinds of pills with alcohol, blacks out for days on end, and puts her life in the hands of a strange man that wants to use her for art while she's passed out, is much more likely to not end up okay. While there is always special cases this wasn't openly reflected enough and that bothers and worries me.
