Barking, screaming, raving mad. A glacial plot (plot?), an insanely verbose painterly prose style, an array of absurdly grotesque characters, a titular protagonist who barely appears... I can absolutely understand why many people hate this. But I thought it was absolutely fantastic - a completely immersive fever-dream of a novel that draws you slowly in to its surreal universe.

DNF at 33%.
I respect the hell out of this book, for its poetic gothic descriptions and elaborately conceived cast of characters, and for being published back in the late 1940's!
But ultimately I'm realizing that there aren't going to be any fantasy elements anytime soon and that I could find many of the same themes in any episode of Downton Abbey...
I hope to return to this one day, but for now my ADHD demands I move on.
