I was drawn in by the intriguing title and promise of a good police investigation.

Right from the beginning the author has left you wanting more, starting with a cliffhanger you have no option but to read on.

DCI Logan is a seasoned police officer, you get a feel for the type of copper he is from the off, one that doesn't think twice about bending the rules to the point of breaking to get a result. He is sent to a different area, an area that he is not familiar with to work with a team he doesn't know. The investigation is against the clock and mirrors a child serial killer case he worked on many years before and it is an investigation that he just can't leave alone. He can see there must be a connection but he really wishes it wasn't true.

I really enjoyed getting to know the different characters good or bad. My favourite would probably be DCI Logan, I really enjoyed his brash almost angry demeanour. He is a character to be trusted that has a lot of life left in him for the author to play with.

The plot is probably going to be hard for some to read but for others it will keep you gripped and turning page after page.

A must read for crime thriller fans.

This book started so well!
During the first 13% I really thought that I had a winner, but unfortunately the writing quality went downhill.
What a nosedive!
The author is great writing descriptions and inner thoughts, but a disaster when it comes to dialogues. I thought they were too juvenile for my liking.
As for the main character, what a rude DCI! He treated his subordinates as if they were his private waiters. And we know nothing about him. There is no in-depth character development.
The storyline is good, but there is nothing new or remarkable about it, except that we know for sure that this DCI is no inspiration to aspiring detectives.
I didn’t think the gory details of animal cruelty were necessary. It added nothing to the story.
And that conclusion was not that great.
Anyways… this clearly did not work for me.
I only finished it because the crime fiction book club had recommended it.

Set in the Highlands of Scotland, this was a solid procedural with a quite vivid setting. A young boy is kidnapped and some of the details of the case are eerily similar to a series of child murders that happened in the past. But the killer was caught and has been locked up in a state mental hospital ever since. DCI Logan has been searching for the remains of the last missing boy for years, with no success. Now he believes that the new kidnapping is the work of a copycat, and is the same modus operandi is used, he will have only a few days to save the boy.

Based in Glasgow, Logan is sent to the rural area of Fort William. Although rugged and hardened, DCI Logan is likable enough and I really wanted him to find the killer. He's obsessed and a little blinded by his theories, but he's a good guy to the core and I enjoyed his way of thinking.

The rest of the characters were quite interesting too, I enjoyed their team work and was a little bit sad that DCI Logan has to go back to Glasgow at the end of the book.

Animal cruelty is something that bothers me A LOT but the way it was described here didn't want me to put down the book immediately, nor did it have me remove any stars, so in my opinion it was not too horrible, even though I would have preferred to

This was a debut and maybe because of that I guessed who the killer was pretty early on, but I'm quite keen on reading the next installment in the series. The audio version made the book even better because the Scottish accent of the narrator really sucked me into the setting, making it even more vivid.
