Een corrupt rechtssysteem die alleen maar kan gestopt worden door een heldhaftige tiener uit een arme buurt.

okay so i'm surprised that i'm not giving this book 5 stars. tbh i do rlly like it, and it used to b one of my favs. i recently reread it and was like?? at some points. it's not confusing perse, but it's just. the book is pretty much 70% dialogue. it honestly could literally b a playscript instead of a book. from what i gathered, everyone in the book is white. the only "diverse" character is mrs barkova. there's a few plot twists but there's a "big" plot twist. i guessed the so-called plot twist in the first couple of chapters. i wasn't surprised. the other plot twist which basically builds the whole plot of the book is so painfully obvious there's honestly no point dragging it out (which it is.) there were some points which didn't add anything to the storyline n idk why they were included tbh. also i was confused why there was a government but not a court system? they mostly come hand in hand so it doesn't make sense why one was abolished but the other wasn't. idek when/where this was supposed to be set. but!! it is rlly good in terms of being a dystopian and overall, the concept is rlly good.

As a YA book, this was quite an easy read with almost no surprises in it. Almost from the get-go I know the direction this was going to take (that there are two further books was a bit of a give away), but that would be my main complaint. There were a couple of revelations I didn’t see coming, so there was that. This also seems to be a statement on the current system of ‘trial by media’ where recent high-profile arrests have been made and the public have jumped on the guilty/innocent band wagon based solely on the information titbits handed out by the sensationalist media. Nothing wrong with that but also nothing that hasn’t been covered before. The character of Martha herself was difficult to like, she spent so much of her time being the petulant and uncooperative teenager that even by the end of the book, I still don’t know much about her. Despite all that, I did enjoy the concept of this story and the Cell system was something a bit different without being over the top. I’m not sure when or where this is supposed to be based, possibly and overpopulated future England (a Prime Minister is mentioned a few times) but this could have been a Townsvilletopiatropolis of the not-so-good future anywhere really. The story picked up a lot towards the end of the book where my predictions came to fruition but there was enough there to give me the gumption to seek out book 2.

Hmmm, teleurstellend. Jammer.
