Obsessed. Listened to it on Audio and the narrator is great. When it ended I said “holy sh*t” and have been staring at the wall for 5 minutes to recover. Will never begin a series that isn’t fully written again because waiting for book 3 is going to be torture!

I really enjoy this story, but the writing is not great. I found it cringey at times and the repetitive, seemingly unedited conversations were exhausting and unbelievable. Mixed with the fact that every character is perfect and never grows and the story is predictable, I wish there was more. However, I am enjoying the story and I look forward to the next book.

“Lips that had spun beautiful words into the air and whispered heated, wicked promises…Lips that had also spoken blood-soaked lies.”

A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire picks up where From Blood and Ash left us. Poppy has learned that her life has been a lie from the meaning of her "Maiden" status to what exactly happens during the famed Ascension for the second sons and daughters of Solis. Casteel has also betrayed her with a hidden identity and an ulterior motive to seek her out. Poppy is at the center of a growing conflict between two nations but she knows she must work with her enemies to learn the full truth of what happened between the Kingdoms and Solis and Masedonia and, hopefully, save those she loves.

Poppy and Casteel provide an enchanting enemies to lovers romance throughout this book that was equal parts tension and sweetness as both try to separate their feelings from the facts. Poppy grows more into herself as she learns the truths of her identity and can finally be - she is not the meek maiden she was forced to be. Casteel struggles with his affections for Poppy and the duty he has to his people and family. Their relationship moves between real and play with the utmost tease and I was living for the moments when they tried to deny their feelings. I yearned for them to figure things out quicker but, at the same time, I couldn't stop reading. In addition, the spice was absolutely perfect for these characters and I lived for banter between them

“I nodded, my heart thundering. ‘I don’t want to pretend,’ I whispered. ‘I’m Poppy and you’re Casteel, and this is real.’”

In this book we also see a great deal more world building outside of Poppy and Casteel with well rounded side characters, a beautiful map of the world, and history that helps tease a part of this world a bit more for us. Poppy asks a lot of questions to help bridge these gaps and I actually enjoyed this because, like Poppy, I also wanted to know. You also see more of this world and it is beautiful and shows an obvious care by the author to create something enchanting for the readers to escape to.

The ending leaves me with so many questions with a cliff-hanger but I actually really liked it (and usually I abhor cliff-hangers). There is much more to the plot with political machinations and a growing war but also gods and fate at play that I look forward to seeing more of.

Overall, this is an excellent enemies to lovers fantasy romance with spice, world building, and plot that makes me excited to jump into the next one!
