This was a hard book for me to nail down just why it did not completely land.  I believe it had something to do with how the story is told.  I usually enjoy when stories are told via diaries or letters, but in this case, I think it hurt the story.  Her actions did not align with many of her thoughts.  The serious nature of the subject matter was kind of put on the wayside.  I believe the author has some strong feelings on mental health and how it's handled, but it came across reckless and uneducated.  The characters were definitely just cardboard cutouts of "this type of person."

This book had huge potential but just didn't land.

I enjoyed some of this book, and would have rated it three stars based solely on the quirky characters and found family vibes, but I has serious problems with this book, starting with how awful Mim is (I get that she’s young and troubled but all the body shaming and “I’m not like other girls” got to me). I love an unreliable asshole narrator, but this didn’t do it for me. My main issue, though -potential spoilers below….

“I’m too old for you…for now.”

Gross. She’s 16 and he’s like 21? Made me hope she imagined him

I'm actually not sure if I liked this book. It definitely made me think, but I can't tell if it's a work of modern genius or an incomprehensible stream of consciousness. Mim is certainly an interesting character, and her quest to find her mom is admirable and something I could really relate to, but some topics brought up in the book and the way they were handled made me uneasy. The writing style in and of itself is incredibly interesting though, and the descriptions that come from Mim are weirdly wonderful. Whether I loved it or not, I will definitely be thinking about it for a while
