This book appeared as very often in my Goodreads suggestions and, against my instinct, I gave in and bought it for the kindle.
The book is well written, and the story was interesting enough for me to have read it until the end. However, I am not the biggest fan of this type of fantasy, and I don't plan on reading the remaining books of the series.
I recommend this book for anyone who likes fantasy with witches, vampires, and time travel.

Really a 3.5 I think. The plot is good, but moves slowly. The character development is really good. I just got bored in parts. I do think I’ll read book 2, but I’m not chomping at the bit to get into it like I have been with other notable vampire series.

Interesting world building & the mystery of unraveling who the protagonist is and what’s happening with all the magic is great. Was less of a fan of the dynamic personally, I enjoyed the side characters more than the protagonists.

So let's just get this out of the way up front. There are vampires (and witches and daemons) and there is a romance. So technically yes this is a 'vampire romance'. I'm glad I didn't know this up front because then I would have avoided a fantastic book which promises a great trilogy. Because it's not just a vampire romance. It's a fantasy novel that mixes magic, science, and history together almost perfectly. And it makes sense now. Apparently the author is a, wait for it, science historian. [slow clap]
So the first book in the trilogy accomplished everything a first book needs to accomplish. I love the characters, I love the premise, and I love where it's heading. Should have read it much earlier. Hopefully some of the romance is toned down a bit in the next books. But I'll live if it isn't.
First person that brings up Twilight gets a punch in the face though. Srsly.

Do some eye muscle stretches before reading this one, or you'll strain something from all the eye rolls.
Not a fan of the overly aggressive vampire and passive female lead. Aspects of the story are enough to keep me reading, though, as long as I didn't think too hard about it. Pure escapist reading.

Draws you in. Good ideas and plot, though loses focus some 2/3 way through. But definately want to read more.
