I REALLY enjoyed this. A silly, sunshine assistant to a broody, grumpy, evil villain, and they like each other? Yes, thank you, I loved it. As a debut novel, it wasn't perfect; there were some sentence structure things that bothered me every once in a while, but overall, the greatness of this book overshadowed those minor issues. The characters were all so incredibly vivid- I enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them. And Evie's voice was everything. The Villain's too, actually. The plot was intriguing, and the details of the magical world made everything brighter. And the humor- I smiled through this whole book. Until I shivered with apprehension, of course, because this book, while whimsical and adorable, also had its dark moments. And the ending- I won't spoil anything, but I had a very physical and vocal reaction to the last few chapters and the closing words. I'm not exaggerating when I say I NEED book 2 right now. I will be thinking about these characters and their story a lot until I get the sequel in my hands.

First fantasy book I’ve read so I’m not sure what to think or feel about it. But I will say I did enjoy it. AND am looking forward to the second book! This felt super YA in the terms of romance but not with how often life or death situations happened, murder, torture, etc. the craziest thing that happened between the two main characters who started pining after each other on the first page was a kiss 🫤

It was fine, even mildly enjoyable. But that ending - yuck! Absolutely abhor a cliff-hanger ending in a book series. I get that you want to entice people to read the next one, but I should still feel like I got a complete story, which I absolutely did NOT in this case. Agree with the reviewer who said this felt like middle grade/YA. The writing was so simple and direct, and some of the plot 'twists' were heavily telegraphed. I'm convinced there are some interesting things going on with the main character's mother and that whole backstory, but I'm too turned off to read any more in the series.

It was an easy read, with many cliches. The characters are a little flat, but it was entertaining.
