I can't really say at this point, obviously, how good of an entry point this was for Lovecraft, but I definitely see the appeal of his writing. I enjoyed it well enough. Like so much classic horror, this wasn't really scary. It's more about the bizarreness and the sense of potential dread that is slowly worked up throughout the narrative. I usually enjoy the perspective of a scientist discovering something inexplicable, which this most certainly was. It didn't suck me and blow me away or anything, but it was something I could appreciate.

Honestly, this is probably Lovecraft's best story. It proves that he could, in fact, write quality cosmic horror when he didn't fall back on bigotry. I love love love the Antarctic setting and the scientific tone of the piece, and how we basically get a tour or tasting menu of the whole weird world. I would pretty much recommend this to anyone unqualified, which I can't say about basically any other of his work.
Graphic: Gore, Animal death, and Body horror
Moderate: Death, Panic attacks/disorders, and Racism
Minor: Colonisation, Mental illness, and Slavery

A Nice, well adapted story that tries a little too hard to recreate 'comic art' from the Lovecraft era.
While the art is playful and definitely reminiscent of Herge and others mentioned in some of the other reviews, it is surely to the detriment of the story's frightening possibilities.
A good but not entirely great graphic adaptation but well suited for the month of October.
