I did enjoy this one but not a favourite of the ones I have read so far. Features Maigret helping a French citizen accused of a crime in a chocolate box Dutch town.

Some good characters but not as strong or interesting as some of the previous ones I have read.

my least favorite Maigret so far. none of the characters in the mystery are compelling; there's a suggestion that a woman would join a feminist group when she's "too ugly" to have any other interests; no particular atmosphere is cultivated, etc etc.

This is a good read, if a little short - even for a Maigret. I like the ending, the fact neither we nor Maigret are sure he did the right thing in revealing the killer. (Of course, as readers, we needed him to)

I’ve marked five stars because to be honest I didn’t see that one coming. However for some reason it took me a while to get going and I could only read a couple of pages at a time before I got bored.
A great story though in the end. A proper who dunnit!

Not one of the worst Inspector Maigret's, but I wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't tell people to avoid it. I have a feeling Simenon wasn't a big fan of Holland and thought it uptight, fake and bizarre. I'll have to read a biography on him to see if I'm right. It could just be Maigret's opinion and not the author's, etc.
