Wonderful story, and even more beautiful illustrations, but we are expecting nothing less from Teckentrup by now!
We had some great conversations about plants, and how they grow, and the illustrations had so much to talk about too..
Just really beautiful, and a story that flows well.

Another lovely book by Britta. This is about growing at your own pace. Sometimes, ones growth is slower than those around you, which does put you at a disadvantage.
This is about about growing up. It's that classic spring energy. The shoot that is seeking the sun no matter what. It's like being a child and you have to seek out where you belong in the world. It's explosive growth and bending seeking the smallest bit of sunlight. In this story, the plant has made some friends and the friends patiently help the little plant find the light. That's nice.
An excellent story.

Ant and Ladybird find a seedling that won't grow, and they encourage it to sprout and grow into the sun. Gradually leaves begin to appear, and the little plant grows out and up looking for more sunshine away from the shade of other taller plants. The little plant begins to blossom and flourish with the help of her little animal and insect friends.
I loved the sweet story of encouragement and growth in this book! It's such a simple story, but with a powerful message. I also love that the growth doesn't happen all at once. The little seedling has to gradually journey up to the sun, in small steps day by day. The animal friends stay by the side of the little plant, guiding the growth, clearing the ground, and offering help and support.
The illustrations are beautiful! I like the soft colors and misty style. There are lots of plants in the background, so that the entire page is full of brown and dark green and soft yellow. Then in the foreground there are mice, butterflies, crickets, and of course, the Ant and Ladybug.
Once the plant reaches the sunlight, the illustrations are much lighter in color, and the whole page is bathed in sunshine with lighter greens and more vibrant yellows. Birds, grasshoppers, beetles, bees, and caterpillars all come to live and play inside the leaves and branches of the newly grown plant. The details are gorgeous!
Then the fall and winter come, and the illustrations are transformed into orange fall colors and then white snow. The whole journey is dazzling!
The construction of the hardcover book itself is quite sturdy, with thick pages and lovely green endpapers.

There once was a seed that took a long time to sprout, long after the other plants had grown up around it. Then it took some time to grow from a seedling into a plant. The creatures in the meadow noticed this special plant and monitored it. Ant and Ladybird sat next to it waiting for it to sprout. Circket guarded her roots and Mouse searched for clear paths. Finally, the plant reached the sunshine and left the meadow undergrowth behind. She grew up and up, wide and broad. She transformed with buds and then hundreds of flowers. All kinds of animals lived in her branches. When autumn came, she turned brown and withered along with the other plants, until one day all of her seeds took flight on the wind. Then winter came and spring arrived later, and that’s when everyone could see the transformation of the meadow.
Teckentrup’s picture book about a unique and different plant celebrates those who may be considered late bloomers and looks at how one individual can transform where they live. The seasonal aspect of the book is done beautifully, as the spring brings the sprouting of the seed, the summer with its amazing growth, and the quiet solemnity of autumn. All of this is captured in her illustrations which are rich and textured. The colors are far from simple, taking on the aspect of each season but also bringing in deep maroons in spring, gold light, and the oranges of autumn.
A quiet and lovely look at seasons, plants and transformation. Appropriate for ages 2-4.
