Taylor Jenkins Reid brought Evelyn Hugo to LIFE. I was hooked from the beginning. She brought homophobia, sexism, and racism to the forefront with how they affected Evelyn’s life in the 50s throughout the 80s and beyond. Loved this book. Love this author. Love Evelyn Hugo.Β

a good book but not the type that I usually like to read. loved how well I could compare myself with the womanhood of Evelyn, even if she's so much beyond with everything, I loved how you could still compare yourself with her. sometimes I even forgot that there is a present time in the book besides her life, so it was a nice touch of reality when it happened. loved how that could make me grip the fact that I'm reading about someone "real" and see her as a person, not only a celebrity.

I feel like the foreshadowing of the plot twist made the twist fizzle out once revealed. It was so hyped that nothing would ever live up to it. I do think by the very end the author was able to turn it back around. I truly enjoyed the first 250 or so pages. I feel the description of the main character's experience as a woman of color was poorly written.Β

My goodness I’m a mess. TJR, you broke me.Β

I’m very last to reading the rest of her work. I loved Daisy Jones and the Six so much, I was scared I wasn’t going to enjoy this one.Β

I did. I absolutely loved the way this book was written. It was hard to put my book down.Β

Anyhow, if you haven’t read it. Do it, especially if you love old Hollywood and all the drama that comes with it.Β

This was a complicated read to say the least. I was truly captivated by the story and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The characters are complex and brutally honest and I was heartbroken and ecstatic every other page, but I couldn’t get it out of my head that these BIPOC characters’ stories were being told by a white author. Frankly, the story would have been the same if Monique and Evelyn were white. It just wasn’t necessary for Reid to tell a story she hasn’t experienced and it just didn’t sit right with me the entire story.

I really enjoyed this book. I'd heard about it for years and assumed it was a very hetero drama - no spoilers, but if you like LGBT fiction, you'll very much enjoy this book. I'm glad I gave it a shot! It was a quick, easy read. The author is a master at telling only the necessary bits of information and allowing the reader's imagination to take it away.

I absolutely loved this. I'm only docking it a quarter of a star because I didn't love the explanation at the end of why Evelyn chose Monique, I didn't hate it, I just felt it was unnecessary and the book was strong enough not to need a "twist".
I found this book incredibly moving and I adored the multiple complex characters and relationships.
This isn't at all my usual genre and I didn't expect to care much about it but it's one of my highest rated books in the last year.
I thoroughly recommend the audiobook read by Alma Cuervo, Julia Whelan and Robin Miles.
