Scientific discovery is often portrayed as a linear progression. That is certainly not the case in astronomy. It is an endeavour pulled in contrary direction by popular opinion, national politics and feuding scientists. Not to mention stymied by budgets and technological limitations.
That said, individuals persist in their ambitions throughout all the traumas to pave the way for the right mission at the right time. They have achieved incredible advances in the past 20 years. It is exciting to think what they might achieve in the next twenty.
