This is an incredible read!

I loved the writing style and how the narration would switch between characters unannounced yet seamless. The inclusion of the Spanish phases were so simple yet gave you that little reminder and a sense of someone’s story being translated for you.

It’s extremely descriptive, I could almost feel the rumble of la bestia beneath me. This also made it a tough read at times, as you get so invested in the characters, some of whom go through unspeakable experiences.

If you enjoyed (is that the right word for this type of book?) The Beekeeper of Aleppo then I think you’d enjoy this too. For me, this hits the mark whereas The Beekeeper felt like there was something missing.

I listened to an audio book.- narrator Yareli Arizmendi.. I actually felt I was walking beside them on their journey.

This was a read that had me anxiously wanting to know what happens next. It ignited more empathy in me but was also so hard to read. Trauma after trauma occurs but the characters are so resilient and lovable and relatable. I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone, but it is worth your time.

This really was a lovely book, well done and definitely pulls you all the way into it from the start. You fall in love with the characters and get your heart broken when they get hurt.

I can see though why people were upset that it was written by a white woman, why that caused such controversy.  It makes you question the credibility behind the story, if the middle class, distant from the situation main character who has always seen herself as outside of the situation of migrants might be a little too on the nose.

It makes me question how much of it is accurate, or just pieced together from the news. And how it paints Mexico in a way that doesn’t seem fair for someone who isn’t from there to paint it.
