***I did not know there was some controversy surrounding the book before I read it and wrote this review. I will keep my 5 star rating the same but will acknowledge the discourse about this book and a nonPOC writing it. The personally believe that since it is known as a work of fiction, that the outcry may be out of proportion. However, this is also not for me to decide as I am White and do not know much about the immigrant experience.***

Wow, an incredible read. I appreciate the complexity of the story, yet the ease it had to digest the plot. The story kept me on my toes and

wasn’t completely an expected (or hoped for) ending.

I could not put this book down as I could feel the tension and accompanying emotions connecting with the text, pushing me to read on. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

At times the book verges on trauma porn, and provides a perspective of Latin America that is violent and full of the worst of that place. However, it is sympathetic to the plight of migrants, and despite the trauma porn aspect it humanises migrants and shows the difficulties they may endure in search for a better life

Some parts seem highly fictionalized and there are problematic stereotypes. I recommend Solito instead of this book if you are looking for a well written, accurate, heart wrenching story about the journey of undocumented immigrants.

I found this book fascinating and challenging, intense and disturbing. I couldn't put it down, but I often wanted to. This one will stick with me.
