What an odd little book. Usually I fall hard for anything with a high quirkiness factor, but this wasn't my flavor. Though the prose was child-like, the subject matter was mature, and the combination just seemed more misguided than revolutionary.

This is a book I had to read for one of my classes last semester. It was just okay, I was confused most of the time. It is a magical realism story set in Los Angeles and everyone has weird names. I honestly would not have picked this up if it was not required reading for a class. 2/5 Stars.

It feels like this book was written by an eight year-old in the late 80s with wealthy, open-minded Hollywood parents who would host parties in their house with a bunch of movie industry people and fun gay guys and let her find her own conclusions about how the world operated while not shielding her from sex or AIDS or anything like that. Super simplistically written-- feels more like a fairy tale rather than magical realism, which was my first impression. However, it is charming and parts of the writing do hit.

the 4 most annoying people in the world get everything they want and even the tragedies that happen to them are just a quirky thing that passes them by. problematic from start to finish. weetzie wears an indian headdress but hey! it’s ok! she feels bad about how we treated native americans. plus she has 2 POC friends! i was a weird alt teen when i first read this and even then i thought it was a bit much. best part about it was you can read it in about 40 minutes. just about the most toxically Gen X bullshit i’ve ever read. i truly cannot believe anyone rated it above 2 stars.
