Creepy, but good creepy. Probably best you don't read this one at night.

A painfully average narrative, told behind below average art.

Rachel Rising was on the reading list for an online course called Gender Through Comics. I had no previous experience with Terry Moore's works (though Strangers in Paradise is also part of the reading list) so I didn't know what to expect.
I quite liked it. It's a great eerie horror series and although this volume seemed to be a lot of set-up, I'm definitely interested in more. In fact, I just got the second volume and will be reading it presently.

I must admit that I am already a big Terry Moore fan. Both Echo and Strangers in Paradise are solid graphic novels. I would recommend this book based on the strength of his art alone. He does amazing things in black and white. His comics are always so crisp and clean, with excellent female characters (He has published a book called How to Draw Beautiful Women if you need proof of his lady drawing talents) Rachel Rising is no different.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention his talents as a storyteller. Rachel Rising begins with a Rachel digging herself out of a shallow grave in the woods, and like any woman that has had to dig herself out of a grave, she is a little confused. Okay, so confused is an understatement. Meanwhile there is a mysterious woman popping up around town persuading people to kill. Toss in a creepy little girl, and you get a comic that has me absolutely hooked.
This is only the first 6 issues of the comic, so I imagine lots more fun stuff in the future. Terry Moore has described Rachel Rising as being like a TV series played out in a creepy little town that could span a few seasons, which makes me super excited.
